The new version of the DSi is more than a gaming console. It includes features that enable its users to create content and share it with other users. It also functions as a media center.  

 

The new version of the DSi will sell for $170 and already hit the shelves in Europe on Friday. So far, the new version of the DSi (which reached its third generation) sold approximately 2 million units since November when it was launched in Japan. 

 

Meanwhile, the second generation of the console, the DS Lite will continue to sell for the price of $130. The new DSi features several enhancements compared to the DS Lite. First of all, the DSi features a slimmer form factor and two built-in cameras, one outside the system’s body and the other on the inside pointing at the user when the DSi is opened. The cameras can detect the gamers’ facial features and their movements so that in-game moves can be directed by exterior movement. 

 

Users can also manipulate the pictures they take with the DSi’s camera. The camera software packs 11 special camera effects. 

 

The Nintendo DSi will also offer users a voice recorder which is also a music player, a stereo headphone output, and an SD card slot. Gamers will be able to download games to the DSi through the new DSiWae which is quite similar to Wii’s WiiWare. The Nintendo DSi is 12% thinner than the Nintendo DS Lite and it features bigger, brighter, 3.25" screens.

 

The device has everything it needs to fulfill its goal. According to Cammie Dunaway, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Nintendo America, the DSi’s goal is to make the gaming experience more personalized. 

 

Currently the Nintendo DSi is selling very well in Japan and there are no reasons to think it wouldn’t do the same in Europe and the U.S. there are some bad news through. The DSiWare is regionally encoded so American or European users won’t be able to download Japanese applications. And another thing: although the changes the DSi features sound impressive enough, in fact, the details aren’t that head-turning. The DSi can only play back AAC, not MP3. Huh? The two cameras that will make the gaming experience more personalized are only 0.3 megapixels. Also, Nintendo change the charging cable, so if you own a DS Lite and want to buy a DSi, you’ll need the new type of cable. 

 

The DSi will launch in two colors: black and blue.
