Sims and Spore Creator, Leaves EA for Stupid Fun Club

Will Wright, the mind behind well-known video games Sims and Spore, has reportedly left Electronic Arts.

Mr. Wright plans to follow another one of his ideas and will run a new entertainment think tank called Stupid Fun Club. EA is reportedly making the equity investment in the think tank.

The Stupid Fun Club’s goal is to develop concepts that can serve as the nexus for video games and also for movies, TV shows and other entertainment-related products. After 12 years with Electronic Arts, the well-known video game developed will head the new venture. His most successful video game, Sims, has sold more than 100 million copies to become the best sold series of video games of all time.

The 49-year-old gaming developer has founded Stupid Fun Club in 2001. The amount of money EA invested in it was not disclosed. Also, it is unknown whether EA will have the right to license any video game themes that Stupid Fun Club comes up with.

Mr. Wright said that he decided to leave EA because he wants to devote his time and energy to his company that he said was an outlet "for strange products and ideas." He said he already has some very interesting ideas and concepts for television and for toy that he can wait to put into commerce.

“The entertainment industry is moving rapidly into an era of revolutionary change,” Wright said in a statement.  “Stupid Fun Club will explore new possibilities that are emerging from this sublime chaos and create new forms of entertainment on a variety of platforms.
