Acer Working on Android Smartphone

Slowly but at a steady pace, the Google-developed Android platform is gaining momentum.  Samsung already released the third Android smartphone (the i7500) and the first Android-running netbook (the Alpha 680) will soon hit the market. T-Mobile also announced it has been working on the implementation of the Android operating system in its new line of home devices.

Now it is Acer's turn to pay attention to Google's OS. The company confirmed the fact that it is already working on several devices that will run on the Android platform.

"The entire industry is looking at Android," said Acer president and CEO Gianfranco Lanci said. He added that Acer is testing the platform and is searching for solutions including an Android platform from an Acer smartphone.

Mr. Lanci said the Android works very well for communication and Web access, but Acer is not sure yet whether this operating system which was developed by Google for smartphones might be suitable for traditional PCs. He underlined that a smartphone running on Android makes far more sense than a netbook operating on the same platform.

So far, T-Mobile, the only U.S. Carrier that sells the Android-running G1 smartphone, had a tremendous success. It recently announced that it sold the one millionth G1. The device hit the market six month ago.

HTC and Far EasTone also announced that they are planning to launch smartphones that run Android. Also Skytone Transmission Technologies  said that its Android-running netbook is in the testing stages. HP, the world's biggest computer maker, also said it is looking into the possibility of using the Android platform in its future lines of netbooks.
