Amazon Invites Journalists For Coffee, Cookies and … Kindle 2?

In October last year, some leaked photos of what appeared to be the next-generation Kindle circulated the media, giving birth to speculation on the date Amazon might be ready to introduce it, or even just confirm it. The photos were supplied by Boy Genius Report.

This week, another rumor indicates that we’re just two weeks away from an official announcement of Kindle 2, and it all started when Amazon invited the press for a news conference it would hold on February 9th at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City.

Although we still don’t have too many details on who will attend the event (Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is said to be there), the chances are they will be talking Kindle 2.

Without any intention of putting more gasoline on the fire, it is worth noting that keeping Kindle 2 a secret is not exactly the best idea, since Kindle is not the only e-book reader out there. Sony has already spiced up the competition with its $400 PRS-700, with touch-screen, the dimensions of a slimmed down paperback book, and a six-inch display.

In early December, Amazon confirmed that the first-generation Kindle e-book reader was out of stock, and will not be available again until February. Doesn’t that just seem like a REALLY big coincidence? There is no confirmation yet on what Amazon is planning to announce, but I’d think twice before making plans to buy the old Kindle.

Amazon launched Kindle in November 2007, in an attempt to reinvent the electronic books, or at least the way they are read. The original price tag was $399, too steep according to analysts, which is why Amazon cut it down to $359 later on. It’s still hard to speculate what price tag Amazon could put on its second-generation Kindle.
