Amazon’s the Kindle 2

Amazon’s new version of the electronic book reader the Kindle brings forth a slimmer design and also more storage, the company’s Vice President Ian Freed having said in an interview that one of the Kindle 2’s best features was that it never got hot.

According to Freed, that is a very important fact about the e-book reader, since Amazon is aiming to render the gadget as invisible as possible for users while they are reading.

Freed said that the device’s main goal was to disappear, which had been the purpose of the original Kindle and also the major thing that the company had had in mind while developing the new model.

The Kindle 2 began shipping on Monday and, besides from the thinner design, it also features an improved cellular modem, which means that users would encounter fewer issues when buying new books or getting updates because they are out of range.

Another new tool is the Whisper Sync, which will enable users to read the same electronic book on multiple devices, including Amazon’s e-book readers and cell phones.

Freed said that the cell phone option was designed mainly for short bits of content, adding that the text-to-speech feature worked with blogs, newspapers, and other content, but that only fractions of text came in an audio format.

Furthermore, the Vice President said that Amazon wanted to add every book, including out-of-print titles, to the Kindle 2, even though the company already has 240,000 books, along with almost all of The New York Times bestseller list.
