Atari Takes Over Ghostbusters: The Video Game

After the Activision – Blizzard merger, the fan-favorite game Ghostbusters was cast into doubt. This was a year ago, and now the game has finally found a home with Atari. Company president Phil Harrison told the media: “Ghostbusters: The Video Game is a fantastic addition to Atari's global line-up in 2009. The title has built considerable anticipation and excitement among game fans.” Another reason for which the fans should wait for the launch is  that the game is being written by the original Ghostbusters writers, Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd, and it will feature voices from the original cast, including Aykroyd, Ramis, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts.

The plot in the game takes place two years after the events of Ghostbusters II (where the Statue of Liberty walks through New York), and is based around the fact that Manhattan is once again overrun by ghosts and ghouls. Atari has been working with Sony Pictures Consumer Products and Terminal Reality (developer of the game) to make sure the project will be finished as soon as possible and launched in time. Good news came to Atari when the company found out it will carry on the previous publisher’s work, Vivendi, and that it wouldn’t have to start all over again.

This is not the only game Atari picked up from Vivendi, the former being the new Chronicles of Riddick game. Ghostbusters: The Video Game will be launched in 2009 on PS 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PS2, PC and Nintendo DS. A month for 2009 was not announced yet, but Atari is looking to bring the title to advanced gaming platforms in order to coincide with the 25th anniversary celebration of the film’s original theatrical release (Ghostbusters originally hit theaters in June of 1984).
