Electronic Arts is working to revive the Need for Speed and it announced four new series installments this year, each of them custom made for specific formats and having a change of focus compared to their predecessors.
EA revealed some previews on some consumer websites such as GameSpot and Eurogame. Probably the most exciting is the Need for Speed: Shift made for Xbox 360, PlayStation, PC and PSP, and currently developed at GTR studio Slightly Mad Studios in London.
The Need for Speed: Shift will probably be a new direction for the video game’s series is a more serious simulation that the previous games. The Shift will be overseen by Black Box executive producer Michael Mann and also by EA Games Europe head Patrick Soderlund.
The second game – Need for Speed: Nitro – will be released just for the Wii and Nintendo DS. It is currently developed by EA in Montreal, but this is all we know about it so far. No screen shots ore previews have been released yet.
The third video game - Need for Speed: World Online – is made especially for the Asian market and will probably hit the consoles in the summer. The free-to-play game is being developed by Black Box and EA Singapore and will also be launched in the U.S. in the winter.
The fourth video game on which EA is working remains a secret, the company said.
"Over the years, we've asked the Black Box team to deliver a new 'Need for Speed' game every year. We've gone to a couple of new studios to deliver next fall's games to inject freshness into the category and give the Black Box team time to retrench," said EA marketing VP Keith Munro in an interview with The Associated Press.
