Environmental-Friendly Devices, in Trend at CES 2009

More than in any other years, this edition of the International Consumer and Electronics show proves that climate changes and pollution are representing serious issues for electronics manufacturers.

Environmental-friendly products are a main theme of the exhibition, as the show’s organizers arranged an entire section for these items.

The e-lantern is one of the most interesting devices in the eco-area at the show. Its kinetic mechanisms provide over an hour of power-on time, once the users shakes it for a minute. Electronics giants also focused on low-power consumption high-definition TVs this year, as there are several models that are claimed to use 30 percent less energy than conventional television sets.

The new generation of HD TVs use LEDs instead of cathode lamps, in order to increase both performance and energy efficiency. Moreover, visitors can also see mercury-free batteries with high capacity, which are also almost fully recyclable.

However, environmental activist say that the authorities need to develop a set of standards that every product that is claimed to be eco-friendly should comply with. Addressing these issue, representatives at several big manufacturers said that their current line-up of electronic devices are more environmental-friendly than similar products that were made five years ago.

Analysts say that the new wave of products that are both economical and eco-friendly is the result of the market’s demand for this kind of devices, as recent studies showed that people are generally more conscious about the environmental effects that their devices have.
