Google’s Android Has Also A Kill Switch

After causing commotion and excitement and selling approximately 1,5 million in pre-sales, another media bomb has been released about HTC’s G1 phone today. Apparently, the operating system on which the phone will work will have a remote kill switch that deletes any applications considered harmful to the device or that serve any malicious purposes. The software, called Android, is developed by Google and it is supposed to make the experience of using a phone very similar to that of using a computer. The kill switch option is also present in Apple’s iPhone and when people found out about it they weren’t very happy.

The chances that the recent news regarding the G1 will affect people in a negative way are pretty high, but some say that Google’s approach is better than how Apple handled the situation. The creators of the Android software announced the existence of the kill switch before the phone was released, unlike Apple which recognized the presence of this option after some users pointed it out. Also, Google has said that it will refund people for any deleted applications and even more, any program for the G1 is fully refundable in 24 hours after its purchase. The fact that iPhone users don’t know for sure if they’re going to get anything if the notorious kill switch deletes any of their applications, puts the G1 at a slight advantage.

The remote kill switch is believed to make sense on the G1 as the Android software is going to give the user the ability to practically do whatever it wants with it, mainly because Android doesn’t pre-screen application like the iPhone does.
