Jay Leno Talks About His New NBC Prime Time Show

Now that the news is out, Jay Leno took the liberty to talk about his upcoming show on NBC after he leaves "The Tonight Show."

NBC announced on Tuesday that starting with the fall of 2009, Leno will be moving from late night to prime time hosting a new variety show which will air five times a week. Marc Graboff, co-chairman of NBC Entertainment said during a Los Angeles press conference that the move comes in hopes of changing how broadcast television works in this new media landscape.

"It just seemed like the time was right for this," 58-year-old Leno told the same news conference. "Would I do this at the beginning of my career, no. But after 17 years of being on 'The Tonight Show,' it's fun to try something different."

The decision will not only cost the network less money, Leno's show would cost less to produce than any drama which currently fill the slot, but it also means NBC doesn't have to worry about competing against him at a rival network.

"Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in," Leno joked.  "Originally, I wasn't going to stay with NBC. But my parents said, 'Whatever you do in life, always try to come in 4th.' "

"The Jay Leno Show," which will air from 10 to 11 p.m., will borrow the popular "Tonight Show" skits such as "Jaywalking," "Battle of the Jaywalking All-Stars," and "Headlines." However, according to John Rash, Senior Vice President and Media Analyst at Campbell Mithun, it's not just a "scheduling shift, it's a potential game changer."

"If advertisers are able to get a big audience, or at least a reasonable audience and be able to count on it, it should be a show that's easy to sell for NBC," Rash added.

However, similarly to the "Tonight Show," the new program will be taped in front of a live audience, and include monologues and celebrity guests.

Leno, who is scheduled to step down from "Tonight" May 29 while Brookline native Conan O’Brien will be taking over in his place in that time slot beginning June 1, said he is eager to "try something different" so the main difference between the shows will be coming from him.

"We will try to get out of the studio more," Leno said, adding that the show, which for now is being called "The Jay Leno Show," will not include the tried-and-true desk setup and will feature "a little more newsmakers, a little more topical stuff."
