Security has always been an important aspect in the life of
every laptop owner, but how do we protect out laptop when we lose it or it gets
stolen? Lenovo’s Constant Secure Remote Disable service is the answer to that, by
allowing users to remotely disable their laptop by sending it a text message, sort
of a kill command.
The company made the official announcement today, for the
ThinkPad line of notebooks, and is expected to deploy ThinkPad Remote Disable laptops
equipped with mobile broadband in the first quarter of next year.
The computer-maker developed the technology in collaboration
with Phoenix Technologies, according to a press release provided by Engadget.com.
This enables users to activate Remote Disable, and create a kill command
message, such as “lockdown PC now” or “PC shut off.” The command is sent via a
cell phone, forcing the PC to disable automatically, and send a confirmation
message back to the user.
“Remote Disable dramatically reduces the anxiety and waiting
people often experience when they’ve been the victim of a lost or stolen notebook
PC,” Bob Galush, vice president of Software and Peripherals Marketing at Lenovo
explained. “Through our work with Phoenix, we are able to reduce customers’
security risks and potential exposure of their confidential data when their
ThinkPad notebook is lost or stolen.”
The technology will be deployed on select notebooks in the
first quarter of next year, and will be supported anywhere there’s GSM/SMS
support. The service will be included in the price of the notebooks, the
company informed.
