LiMo Foundation announced today that six operators have agreed to deliver handsets based on its LiMo Platform this year. The operators are NTT DOMOCO, Orange, SK Telecom, Telefonica, Verizon Wireless, and Vodafone, but LiMo said further participants also include KTF, SFR, SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp., Swisscom, and Telecom Italia.
According to the announcement, the handsets will be based on the latest version of the LiMo Platform, and will include contributions from leading OEMs, ISVs and platform providers, but also from open source developers.
Morgan Gillis, executive director of the LiMo Foundation said in a statement: The powerful commitments being made by LiMo’s operator members clearly demonstrates that the LiMo Platform is delivering highly efficient, consistent and flexible code base that can be optimized to meet the market and technical requirements of major mobile operators.
LiMo will showcase its platform during the Mobile World Congress taking place in Barcelona, Spain next week. NEC and Panasonic will present 10 handset models, while LG Electronics and Samsung will also reveal their prototypes.
LiMo also announced on Monday that the technologies for the R2 release of the LiMo Platform have also been completed. In addition to that, LiMo also revealed that the latest features of the LiMo Platform include advanced multimedia, location-based services, device management and enhanced security.
On February 9, Telefonia and SK Telecom have been officially presented as new additions to the Board of Directors of LiMo. The LiMo Foundation was launched in 2007.
