Stockholm - Outgoing Swedish EU Commissioner Margot Wallstrom is regarded as her country's best proponent within the 27- nation European Union, according to a survey Friday.

Wallstrom, who has said she was not seeking a third term as EU Commissioner, placed better than Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt among those who were asked who best represented Sweden's interests in the EU.

Wallstrom, a Social Democrat, garnered 29 per cent in the Skop survey while Reinfeldt and Bildt each had 25 per cent. Opposition leader Mona Sahlin of the Social Democrats scored a lowly 4 per cent.

The poll was published in Friday's edition of the Stockholm daily Dagens Nyheter.

Polling institute Skop surveyed 1,092 people March 29 to April 18 and was commissioned by Reinfeldt's conservative Moderate Party, the main force in the centre-right coalition.

Sweden in July takes over the rotating presidency of the EU.
