A startup company called OnLive is attempting to use cloud computing to provide 3D video games without online. All gamers will need would be a broad band Internet connection and a platform such a desktop computer or even a netbook or on their TV through an HDMI connection, but for this they would need a ‘’MicroConsole.”
By launching this ‘cloud-based’ way of providing online video games, OnLive has a pretty big change of taking at the giant console makers and succeeding. The company said it will be able to provide video games online and playable on almost any pc, even on those which do not have strong graphics processors.
OnLive announced it ambitious plans at the Game Developer Conference on Tuesday night. Video gamers will be able to rent or buy the video games they want and play them almost instantly. The company said it plans to make the fast games playable online by storing the games on its computer server, thus making them easy to play via a high-speed Web connection. This can be achieved by rapidly compressing/decompressing the files so the game would run as if it would be on a console or PC.
Want to play video games on your TV. You’ll need a ‘MicroConsole’ the size of a smartphone and a broadband connection to the OnLive service. The tiny console is operated through a wireless controller.
The OnLive service will be able to provide 720p HD streams over a 5-Mbps connection, while SD games only need a 1.5-Mbps line to run.
The company, which has been developing its service for seven years now, already inked deals with the industry giants such as Take-Two Interactive, Electronic Arts, Atari Interactive, Warner Bros. Interactive and others.
