QuickPlay to Offer Full TV Shows on BlackBerrys

QuickPlay Media Inc announced it will soon deliver full length TV shows to Research In Motion’s BlackBerry smartphones through the recently-launched BlackBerry App World. QuickPlay Media already inked deals with TV networks, including NBC, CBS Corp and MTV.

The PrimeTime2Go service from QuickPlay Media will let users subscribe to it and get full, downloadable seasons of top shows, such as The Office, 30 Rock, The Hills, CSI, 90210 and America's Next Top Model.

The show can be downloaded in the background, while running other applications or phone functions, but the download is being made via Wi Fi because the files are too large to be downloaded through cellular networks.

QuickPlay Media’s monthly subscription fee for the PrimeTime2Go service will be of $7.99. The service will be available on the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Curve 8900. Both handsets are equipped with Wi-Fi links and are sold in partnership with AT&T and T-Mobile USA. However, QuickPlay said the service will soon be available on other RIM handsets and on numerous other smartphones as well.

The service of providing full episodes of TV shows on cell phones was attempted until now by Verizon and Sprint so far, but both failed to deliver because their systems do not work very well as the streaming of the episodes is dependent on stuttering cellular data networks. However, QuickPlay’s idea of downloading video content that can be watched offline will surely prove the formula for success in this field.

"People are beginning to use these devices to watch entertainment in places where they don't have a connection," on planes and in underground trains said IDC analyst Scott Ellison, Reuters reported. "I've been really surprised to see how many people are watching movies and TV shows on their iPhone."
