Samsung Unveiling Solar-Powered Touch Phone

At the World Mobile Congress 2009 held in Barcelona, Samsung unveiled its new handset called the “Blue Earth,” which is the first solar-powered full-touch screen phone.

The new gadget features a solar panel that is located on the back of the phone, which according to the company, is able to generate enough power in order to allow users to make calls at anytime and anywhere.

Moreover, the „Blue Earth” comes fitted with a 5 star energy efficient charger running on less than 0.03W of electricity the time it is put in standby.

Samsung said that the new device would offer customers an „eco mode” interface, which enables users to adjust backlight duration and Bluetooth in order to maximize the phone’s effectiveness.

In addition, the handset features a pedometer-based „eco walk” tool that measures the amount of carbon dioxide that has been offset by choosing to walk instead of driving, while the way this benefits the environment is measured in the number of trees that have been saved.

„Blue Earth” is made from recycled plastic and does not include harmful substances such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs), Beryllium and phthalates.

On a related topic, LG has also revealed plans to introduce a prototype handset recharged by solar panels built into its case, yet the company failed to give out much information concerning the device.

Still, images released by LG show something similar to its version of its KF750 Secret gadget fitted with solar cells that cover the back of its case.

In both devices, the solar panel doesn't provide sufficient energy so as to make the phone work directly, but it is used to recharge a conventional battery that’s placed inside the devices.
