Sony Cuts Price of PlayStation 2 to $99.99

Sony Corp.’s Sony Computer Entertainment America said it will slash the price of its PlayStation 2 game system to $99.99 from $129.99 previously. The company believes that the slashing of the console’s price by 23% will sustain the life of the PS2, which has sold about 136 million units since it hit the shelves for the first time nine years ago.

Unfortunately for avid gamers that were expecting some price cuts for Sony’s PlayStation 3, the console will sell for the same price, $399.99 for an 80-gigabyte model.

Although many video games are now compatible to the high end consoles such as the PS3, Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Co.'s Wii, the PS2 is standing its ground. "For some families, $99 is a great way to get into video games," said Peter Dille, Sony's senior vice president of marketing. He added that the PS2 was the most played console of last year with 31.7 percent of the gamers, Nielsen Co. said.

Although the headlines belong to the latest vide gaming consoles, the PS2 is doing pretty well in the market after nine years in the jungle. It’s just like the bunny from the Duracell batteries; it just keeps going and going and going…

Before Sony announced the price drop for its PS2, all the rumors were about the PS3. Some said Sony will announce a brand new browser, online content for the PS3, a release date for God of War III or even a $100 price drop for the PS3 as a way to boost the slumping sales. They were all wrong in the end. It was about giving the PS2 a second life.

Considering the fact that the current state of the economy will make most gamers think twice before buying a new gaming console and that a recent study showed that shooter games improve eye vision, the PS2 may have a second long life in the video games market.

The PS2 will start selling at the new price tomorrow.
