T-Mobile to Soon Launch Android-Running Home Devices

Google’s Android platform gains momentum. After HP said it was considering building Android-running netbooks, which spells TROUBLE for Microsoft’s Windows operating system, it’s now T-Mobile’s turn to announce it plans to focus on pushing into home communications devices that will run on the Google-developed platform.

T-Mobile, which is already selling the first Android smartphone (the G1 formerly known as the HTC Dream), said it will soon sell a home phone and then a tablet computer. Both devices will run on the Android platform according to a report from The New York Times.

A T-Mobile spokesperson confirmed the fact that the company plans to release several Android-based devices and soon, but did not give details about the specifics of the devices.

Although it’s the fourth largest wireless carrier behind AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, T-Mobile was the first to bring an Android-running mobile phone, the G1. The Android operating system is open source, which means that companies that use it (without having to pay like they do for Windows) can alter its code in order to better suit their needs. At the CTIA 2009 in Las Vegas, Samsung announced it plans to sell three Android-running smartphones this year, but not before putting it twist on the Android software. The first smartphone producer that used the Android platform was Taiwanese company HTC, which made the G1 and will soon launch the G2, also known as the HTC Magic.

The fact that companies such as HTC, Samsung and HP show their interest in using the Android platform shows that the line between smartphones and portable computers (netbooks and laptops) is becoming very indistinct. Android started slowly, but it seems to gain momentum with every month that passes. Who knows where it will stop or if it ever will?
