Top Companies Stop Selling BPA-Containing Baby Bottles

Recent studies showing that a substance also used in producing baby bottles is dangerous to the infants’ health, corroborated with pressure from authorities prompted the top companies producing the aforementioned items to stop selling.

The top companies who stopped selling baby bottles containing bisphenol A or BPA, an industrial chemical, are: Playtex Products Inc., Gerber, Evenflo Co., Avent America Inc., Dr. Brown and Disney First Years.  Dutch company Royal Philips Electronics NV joined the group of companies that decided to halt sales of baby bottles, CNNMoney.com reported.

The companies said that they will no longer market the polycarbonate baby bottles and several other baby products that contain BPA. Polycarbonate, which contains BPA, is widely used including in the making of the inside lining of metal food and drink containers.

The companies mentioned above also vowed that they will stop using BPA as an ingredient in their production process. The announcement was made by Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who said that he and AGs from Delaware and New Jersey sent a letter to companies urging them to take measures against BPA-containing production.

Dozens of studies on this issue reached more or less the same conclusion: BPA hurts people, especially very young ones, and acts as the hormone estrogen in the human body. Thus, it can affect the normal functions of human genes.

However, the problem is more than complex. The substance is being used in the production of so many commercial items that 93 percent of humans have traces of BPA in their urine, according to one of the studies.
