According to data from a company that monitor Internet traffic, there is a great number of Twitter users who quit the micro blogging Web site after about one month of since joining.
The report from Nielsen Online shows that about 60 percent of those who create a Twitter account quite it after about one month. These stats are quite surprising. Until this report we were used mostly to articles that explained and praised the meteoric growth of Twitter. For me it's really a surprise to find out that, despite the viral nature of Twitter, it's not doing so well when it comes to user loyalty.
In other words, the stats show that Twitter's retention rate is currently of about 40 percent.
"Twitter's audience retention rate, or the percentage of a given month's users who come back the following month, is currently about 40 percent," David Martin, Nielsen Online's VP of primary research, said.
Twitter was created about three year ago and has had a decent start. It gathered a considerable number of users that enjoyed sending and reading tweets – short messages of maximum 140 characters – but really exploded recently with starts such as Oprah Winfery who sang Twitter's praises to her mass of fans and as Ashton Kutcher who became the first Twitter account with 1,000,000 followers beating CNN's Twitter account. Also, President Barack Obama has used Twitter during the presidential campaign last year.
