Entering its third day on the market, the G1 phone is
without a doubt on the right track. Sales are doing great, while the positive
feedback seems to be considerably bigger than the negative one.
Google also opened an application portal, called Android
Market, which offers free apps for HTC’s product and also for future Android
phones.
The device, released through T-Mobile, offers customers
another option on the smartphone market. The initial reaction to the news about
its upcoming release was to tag it as the iPhone killer, statement which now
appears to be a little over the top. It’s true that the pre-orders and the
sales so far point out the general enthusiasm about the release, but there is
still a long way to go before it can be placed in the same league as the
iPhone. The two share several features, such as the large screen and
touchscreen capabilities, and also present certain features that set them
apart, with fans praising one or the other. The reason why these comparisons
never seem to end is because Apple set the standard for this market’s segment
and any upcoming release over the next few years will probably have to go
through this comparative study.
One of the G1’s main attractions is its Android operating
system, the first ever released by Google, which represents the focus of the
advertising campaign. The company provides quick access to many of its
applications, including Google Maps, Calendar, Google Talk, Gmail and YouTube.
In order to make things even easier for its users, Google set a sync process
between the device and the Web, and any information introduced in the portable
is being recorded over the Internet. For example, all the contacts with their
phone numbers, addresses, emails, birthdays will also be available from a
computer on Gmail, ensuring that if a user loses the phone all the information
gathered will still be available and transferable to a new device. Also, all
the data introduced in a computer appears in a matter of seconds on the device.
One of the ways users can protect their phones is by setting
a lock screen pattern which ensures that no other person can access the device.
The G1 and the iPhone seem to take a lot of the media’s
attention, leaving other devices in the shadow. One of them is Research in Motion’s
Storm 9530, released through Verizon Wireless. This is the company’s first
touchscreen BlackBerry, offering an innovative touchscreen that users can
actually physically click, a high-resolution camera and a significantly
improved Web browser.
There is still a lot of room for new devices in this
market’s segment and also room for improving the companies’ present offers. The
constant comparisons should not irritate or discourage any of the players
involved and actually motivate them to find new ways of improving the products,
the services and the presentations. The companies are looking forward to the
holyday season, which is expected to considerably boost sales everywhere ad for
everyone.
