Verizon Launches Network Extender to Boost Home Cell Phone Calls

Verizon has come up with a brand new device that will enable you to have increased cell phone reception when you need it.

The device, a Samsung-made femtocell (small home router) that can boost a cell phone's range, is called the Verizon Network Extender and it basically works by using a consumer’s broadband Internet connection in order to provide coverage for approximately 5,000 square feet.

By providing an increased cell phone reception, the Network Extender can also improve the ability to send text messages, access the mobile Web, and download e-mail. However, it does not support 3G speeds on Verizon's 3G network. The Network Extender essentially translates the cellular call into a VOIP connection using the home’s broadband connection.

The Verizon's "Network Extender" is available for $249.99 and that’s the final price. It won’t be supplemented or subsidized by any monthly pricing and it doesn’t use up any minutes on the user’s plan, the company said.

Other big players have already launched similar devices.  Sprint has the Airrave (also made by Samsung) and T-Mobile provides the same services through HotSpot@Home. Only AT&T has not made public any intention of releasing a femtocell.

Verizon’s new product targets the people who live or work in rural areas located on the outskirts of a cell site.

"Current and prospective customers have told us they want this, and we are responding to that demand," said Jack Plating, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Verizon.

All the Verizon Network Extender requires is a normal power outlet and a home broadband Internet connection.
