Although it was not expected to
break any record, “Shrek the Third” did it again! Being the third part of the
trilogy, the animation movie grossed about $122 million in its only first three
days on the market!
It is important to notice that
this record comes to contradict even DreamWorks’s chief Jeffrey Katzenberg own
words! Katzenberg said earlier last week that one should not expect from “Shrek
the Third” to be a hit, cautioning that “for ‘Shrek” it’s not important “where
we start”, but “where we finish”. However, it seems that the third apparition
of the green, fat, funny ogre and its fairy tale companions had another impact
on the audience. People seem to have fallen in love with Shrek, Princess Fiona,
Donkey, and with their adventures, although one said that this time something
seemed change. Maybe “Shrek the Third” became more mature, (and unfortunately
less funny), maybe in this part of the trilogy he and his friends changed a
little just because of the fact that they are living creatures. And everything
that lives, changes…
Anyway, the most important thing
(at least for DreamWorks Animation SKG, and for its chief Katzenberg!) is that
“Shrek the Third” even surpassed “Shrek 2”, which grossed only $108 million in
its first weekend on release three years ago. So…, the ogre is here and he’s
hungry! But people enjoy it! What could be wrong with that?
“Shrek the Third” also became the
third biggest opening week-end of all time, as it followed “Spider-Man 3” and
“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”, which took respectively $151
million and $135.6 million at the box office in their first weekends. Shrek
seemed strong enough to challenge Spider-Man, as it is the second movie of the
month to take at least $100 million. However, after its release the third
installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “Pirates of the Caribbean:
At World’s End” is expected to join them.
So, ogres, superheroes and
pirates, fantasy, fighting evil and adventure, this is the trend!
