China is facing a new food scare, this time it's their tangerines which have been hit by fruit fly rumours at a cost of millions of dollars in lost sales.
The Chinese press has said the scare has caused direct economic losses of 400 million yuan (57 million U.S. dollars) so far and the figure is expected to rise if the crisis does not end in a week. In Beijing, tangerines usually popular at this time of year, are selling for a fraction of their usual price. Shoppers are still reluctant to buy while the rumours are still rife.
